Whether a cannabis concentrate contains THCa or THC depends largely on its processing and intended use. Raw cannabis naturally contains THCa, a non-intoxicating compound that transforms into THC when heat is applied—a chemical change known as decarboxylation.

Many concentrates, including live extracts and THCa crystals, remain rich in THCa until they are heated through vaping or dabbing, at which point THC is produced and psychoactive effects occur. Other products, such as THC distillates, are already activated and designed for immediate use in cartridges, edibles, or tinctures.
