Arete Donates to Jamaica's Hurricane Melissa Recovery Efforts

Arete is proud to announce a donation of $15,554 to Hurricane Melissa Relief for Jamaica in support of disaster recovery efforts in Jamaica following Hurricane Melissa, which devastated the island on October 28, 2025.

These funds were raised through sales of Lamb’s Bread, the famous Jamaican cannabis strain said to be favored by deceased reggae legend Bob Marley. Inspired by Marley’s renowned connection to "ganja", Arete — a leader in the hemp and cannabis industry — wanted to contribute to the island’s recovery in a meaningful and symbolic way.

1. 45 reported deaths with 15 individuals still missing, underscoring the devastating human toll.

Environmental Impact

1. Up to 32,500 people were displaced, many losing homes and access to schools, clinics, and markets.
2. More than 4.8 million tonnes of debris were left across western Jamaica, blocking roads and critical infrastructure.

Economic Impact

According to the WorldBank.org, and multiple other sources:

1. $8.8 billion USD in physical damage, roughly 41% of Jamaica’s 2024 GDP.
2. Total estimated economic losses, including business interruptions and infrastructure damage, could exceed $20 billion USD.
3. Road repair costs alone are estimated at $217 million USD, with rebuilding needed for communities and transport networks.

These figures give some sense of the scale of the devastation, but still fail to capture the full depth and breadth of destruction Hurricane Melissa inflicted on the people of Jamaica. The need for relief is massive and ongoing. Through this donation, Arete aims to provide tangible support to those affected, helping communities begin the long process of rebuilding while honoring Jamaica’s cultural heritage.
